Welcome to another Shipwright Service photo gallery, here we are showcasing a C&C 40 sailboat rudder. Our team has built over 50 rudders to date, and this project showcases our dedication to craftsmanship and attention to detail.
This particular rudder was in need of replacement due to damage sustained in a grounding. We removed the old rudder but were able to salvage the undamaged shaft. We then created a new core using high-density closed-cell marine-grade foam sheets laminated onto the shaft. To ensure optimal strength and adhesion, we applied fibreglass using the vacuum-bagging process.
Before fairing, the rudder was test-fitted to ensure a perfect fit. Once we were satisfied with the fit, we moved on to fairing the rudder. We applied Interlux Interprotect 2000E barrier coat and painted the section of the rudder above the waterline to match the topsides and bootstripe. The result is a beautifully crafted rudder that is not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing.
